Yoshii helps himself: hit, run, stolen base

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHOENIX (AP) -- About once a year, Randy Johnson has a game like this.

Johnson lost for the first time in seven starts since May 16, allowing three earned runs for only the second time this season as the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0 Saturday night.

Johnson (11-2), who allowed six runs over 35 2/3 innings in his previous five starts, gave up all four runs and five hits in seven innings. Because one run was unearned, he came out with a 1.60 ERA -- still the best of any starter in the majors.

But he struck out only six -- his lowest total since June 20, 1999, against Atlanta -- walked two, hit one batter and threw a wild pitch.

"I thought he was the same old Randy," said Brian Hunter, who was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. "It just wasn't the same result. He's still one of the best pitchers in baseball, but we wanted to be aggressive and take what we could."

Johnson's only other loss this year was to Montreal's Javier Vazquez on May 16. He had been 7-0 at home.

In the sixth inning, he fanned Neifi Perez for the 2,856th strikeout of his career, moving past Jim Bunning for 12th on the career list. Johnson, who got just one more strikeout, leads the majors with 164.

"We never really got anything going, and they did," Johnson said. "They got on base, stole some bases, got in scoring position. They got key hits and they produced everything they got."

Masato Yoshii (3-7), who improved to 3-0 against Arizona this year, hasn't beaten any other team.

"Yoshii was outstanding, as was their bullpen," Diamondbacks manager Buck Showalter said. "I thought we pitched well too."

Yoshii, who beat the Diamondbacks 9-1 in Phoenix on April 17 and 19-2 in Denver on June 18, allowed five hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out four and walked just one.

"It's nothing special about the Diamondbacks," said Yoshii, who has a 1.37 ERA in 19 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks. "I try to pitch the same way every day."

He escaped a first-and-third jam in the fifth when shortstop Perez fielded a grounder by Tony Womack, stepped on second and threw to first for an inning-ending double play. Gabe White relieved with two on and two outs in the sixth, and struck out Travis Lee. White allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings, setting a Rockies record with 23 consecutive scoreless innings. Curtis Leskanic held the previous mark of 21 1/3 innings, set from July 1-Aug. 24, 1999. Arizona outhit Colorado 7-6. Mike Myers followed White and got one out and Jose Jimenez, who beat Johnson with a no-hitter for St. Louis at Bank One Ballpark last year, finished up.

After retiring his first six batters, Johnson fell behind in the third when Scott Servais led off with a walk and scored on Jeff Cirillo's sacrifice fly.

Colorado added three runs in the fifth, when Yoshii singled leading off, making him 8-for-28 at the plate this season, and stole a base for the first time in 74 career games in the major leagues.

It was one of four stolen bases in six attempts by the Rockies.

Tom Goodwin doubled for a 2-0 lead and attempted to steal third and came home when Kelly Stinnett's throw was misplayed by Craig Counsell and rolled into left for an error on the third baseman.

Hunter then singled, stole second, and scored on Mike Lansing's single.

"When you face this guy (Johnson), our guys really have to be as good as they can be everywhere -- on the field, on the bases," manager Buddy Bell said. "You know you're not going to get 10 or 12 baserunners against this guy, so our guys did what they had to."

Game notes
Johnson's ERA was the highest since after his first start, when it was 2.08. ... Yoshii had not walked anyone in 10 1-3 innings _ a stretch of 45 batters _ until Erubiel Durazo got a base on balls in the first. ... Jay Bell was 0-for-12 on the homestand before a sixth-inning single. ... Colorado 1B Todd Helton was out of the starting lineup after going 0-for-3 against left-hander Brian Anderson on Friday night. Terry Shumpert got the first start of his career at first in his 507th career game. Helton came in after Shumpert's error.
