CHICAGO (AP) _ Shane Andrews watched from the on-deck circle as Bob Wickman, one of the best closers in the game this season, threw pitches Henry Rodriguez had no chance of hitting.

The fastballs whizzed by one after another, and Rodriguez went down as Wickman's 15th strikeout victim of the season. As Andrews walked to the plate, he was just hoping he could get a good look at the ball.

He did. Got a pretty good crack on it, too.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew," said Andrews, whose RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning Monday night gave the Chicago Cubs a 12-11 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

It was the first run allowed by Wickman (0-1) this season.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cubs. It was their first extra-inning victory in six tries this year.

"It feels good. Real good," said Mark Grace, who had one of Chicago's five homers. "We needed that one."

But the Cubs shouldn't have needed Andrews' extra-inning heroics to get it. Andrews and Sammy Sosa each hit three-run homers, and Grace, Ricky Gutierrez and Eric Young added solo shots.

Chicago led 9-1 after the third inning, then took an 11-7 lead into the ninth. But the Cubs being the Cubs, that's when things fell apart.

Jeromy Burnitz's second homer of the night started a four-run rally. Marquis Grissom struck out, but the Brewers went on to load the bases. Rick Aguilera relieved Kyle Farnsworth, but walked Henry Blanco to force home a run, then gave up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Charlie Hayes.

"We're the type of team that won't quit," said Brewers manager Davey Lopes, who was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing a called strike. "We've had some games where we've struggled offensively, but we're starting to put some good offensive games together."

Jose Hernandez also connected for the Brewers, who fell one run short.

Wickman hit Gutierrez with a pitch and gave up a single to Grace in the 10th. Sosa, who has 19 home runs against the Brewers since 1998, was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.

Rodriguez struck out swinging, and then it was Andrews' turn. He took a slider from Wickman and placed it perfectly, dropping it between the shortstop and the left fielder.

Felix Heredia (1-0) pitched the 10th and struck out three and walked one.

"I tried making a good pitch, but he got one off the end of the bat and it found grass," Wickman said. "The pitchers didn't do their jobs. You're not going to win a lot of games that way."

Notes: The Cubs and Brewers get offensive every time they play each other, and Monday's game was no different. The teams combined for 29 hits and eight homers. In 25 games since 1998, the teams have scored 371 runs and hit 103 homers. ... After going homerless for 25 games, Burnitz has three in two days. ... Gutierrez's homer was his fifth of the season, tying his career high. ... The Cubs' scoring line for the first three innings read 4-1-4, which also happens to be Milwaukee's area code. ... Sosa has homered four times in five games, during which he has gone 12-for-22 (.545).
