CHICAGO (AP) _ Before he even took the mound, Frank Castillo knew how important his start was going to be. One more shaky performance and his spot in Toronto's rotation would be in jeopardy.

"I just didn't give in. I stayed positive," Castillo said after beating the Chicago White Sox 4-1 on Tuesday night for his first major league win since July 23, 1998.

That's a long time between victories, even though Castillo didn't have a chance to win a big league game last season because he was in the minors.

After failing to get past the fourth inning in three of his four previous starts with the Blue Jays, Castillo decided to relax and heed some important advice from an important person _ his wife.

"Don't worry about anything. She told me to go out there and have fun and enjoy it. And that's what I did," he said.

"This career doesn't last forever and you have to approach the game like that. It's been a while since I've won and it's especially nice to do it here in Chicago because I played here (with the Cubs) for a while."

Castillo (1-2) allowed just four hits and a run in six strong innings.

He gave up a homer to Paul Konerko in the second and then survived a bases-loaded predicament in the fifth. He made a great play from his knees on a slow roller to throw out Jeff Abbott and then fanned Ray Durham to get out of the inning.

"If Ray gets a hit, I'm down 3-0," said Castillo, whose last victory in 1998 was for Detroit against Cleveland. "By getting out of it, we were still only down a run."

Chicago starter Jim Parque, facing a three-game suspension later this month for his role in a brawl with Detroit, shut out the Blue Jays on two hits for six innings before Toronto erupted for three runs in the seventh off reliever Kelly Wunsch.

The White Sox have lost three straight for the first time since last September.

"It's a long season and there are going to be some rough spots," Parque said. "There are going to be times when the offense or the defense or the pitching don't click. It's just three games. It's not a big deal."

Chicago misses cleanup hitter Magglio Ordonez, who sat out the second of a five-game suspension. The White Sox, who were the AL's top offensive team in April, have now scored just four runs in their first two May games.

"Teams go through this on and off during the season," said bench coach Joe Nossek, the acting manager as Jerry Manuel sat out the fifth of an eight-game suspension.

"The aftermath of Detroit, not the fight itself, but with the suspensions has probably been a distraction."

Toronto got its three runs in the seventh when Chicago second baseman Ray Durham made a low throw to the plate, helping the tying run to score, and later missed touching second, allowing the Blue Jays to load the bases. Tony Batista followed with an RBI single and Brad Fullmer a sacrifice fly.

Jose Cruz Jr. hit his 10th homer in the eighth.

Notes: Billy Koch pitched the ninth for his seventh save. ...Andy Thompson made his first major league start for the Blue Jays. He had other things on his mind, as well. His wife is expecting in Madison, Wis. ... Chicago SS Jose Valentin made his 11th error in 24 games. ... On a night when the crosstown Cubs were playing at the same time in Kerry Wood's return from elbow surgery, attendance at Comiskey Park was 10,397.
