Lowell has four RBI for Florida

MIAMI (AP) -- John Shulock realized he made the wrong call too late to help the Colorado Rockies.

Preston Wilson hit a controversial home run and Mike Lowell drove in four runs to give the Florida Marlins a 7-6 victory over the Rockies on Sunday.

Wilson's two-run homer down the left-field line off Pedro Astacio (0-2) in the first inning, appeared to be foul by about six feet. But Shulock, in his first series at Pro Player Stadium, called the ball fair.

"I thought it curved around the pole, until I found out from others," Shulock said. "I guess everybody in the park but me. I guess it was foul, it's not something I did intentionally, just a bad call."

After an argument from Rockies manager Buddy Bell and third baseman Terry Shumpert, home plate umpire Ed Rapuano did not reverse the call and the Marlins led 2-0.

"If I say what's on my mind, I'll get suspended for life," Bell said.

Last year, umpire Frank Pulli made history when he consulted instant replay to change Cliff Floyd's home run to a double here at Pro Player. Baseball denounced the use of instant replay in helping umpires make calls.

"There was no thought of that at all," Shulock said. "They (Pulli) set a precedent, baseball didn't. The last guy who was perfect was crucified. I don't want that to be me. ... I just made a mistake; what can I tell you?"

Lowell hit a three-run double in the fifth and a solo homer in the eighth to lead the Marlins.

Ryan Dempster (1-1) pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and three runs with nine strikeouts. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up two singles over his last 5 1/3 innings.

Antonio Alfonseca pitched the ninth for his third save. Alfonseca allowed an RBI single to Shumpert before Neifi Perez grounded out with two runners on to end the game.

Florida broke open a 3-2 game in the fifth inning against Astacio. Luis Castillo reached on a bunt single to start the inning. Mark Kotsay walked and one out later Wilson singled to load the bases.

Lowell cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line to knock Astacio out of the game. Astacio gave up six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Pinch-hitter Jeff Manto hit a three-run home run off reliever Braden Looper to cut Florida's lead to 6-5 in the eighth inning.

Castillo, who also doubled and scored on Brant Brown's double in the third inning, robbed Tom Goodwin of a base-hit up the middle to end the Rockies' bases-loaded threat in the eighth.

Castillo made another stellar play in the ninth, robbing Larry Walker of a hit when gloved a slow roller and flipped the ball in one motion to nip Helton at first. Walker, the NL batting champion, went 0-for-11 in the series.

"The kid (Castillo) saved us," Marlins manager John Boles said. "That's as good a game I've ever seen from that position."

The Rockies scored twice in the second off Dempster on a sacrifice fly by Perez and an RBI single by Astacio.

Game notes
Wilson's homer extended his hitting streak to seven games, the only Marlin to hit safely in every game. ... Brown, a part-time player most of his career, is 11-for-21 against Astacio with two homers after going 2-for-3. ... The Rockies starters didn't post a win in their season-opening six-game road trip. Colorado begins a seven-day, seven-game homestand Monday against Cincinnati, followed by St. Louis.
