MESA, Ariz. (AP) _ Terrence Long homered and drove in five runs and Ariel Prieto won in his first start in nearly two years as the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago Cubs 13-5 on Friday night.

Long hit a two-run homer in the first, capping a five-run inning off loser Kyle Farnsworth. He added a three-run double in the fifth as the A's kept up their torrid spring hitting. Oakland leads the majors with 83 runs scored this spring.

Long, acquired from the Mets in the Kenny Rogers deal last July, is one of the reasons for the offensive success. He is hitting .471 with nine RBIs in 17 at-bats as he tries to earn Oakland's center field job.

Prieto has pitched just 8 1-3 innings in the majors the past two seasons because of elbow problems. In his first start for Oakland since April 19, 1998, Prieto allowed two runs _ one earned _ and two hits in two innings.

Mario Encarnacion added a two-run homer for Oakland, connecting in a four-run fifth inning off Rodney Myers. Greg Martinez hit a solo shot in the ninth off Micah Bowie.

Chad Myers hit a two-run inside-the-par homer in the ninth for the Cubs when Martinez slipped going after a ball in left field. Martinez was carted off the field and was to have X-rays on his left ankle.

Todd Van Poppel, Oakland's first-round draft pick in 1990, made his first appearance for the Cubs, pitching one scoreless inning.

Sammy Sosa went 0-for-3 for Chicago.
