CHICAGO (AP) _ Kip Wells showed why he's in Chicago's plans for next season, winning for the fourth time in five decisions as the White Sox handed Minnesota its eighth straight loss, 6-1 Saturday night.

On a chilly next-to-last game of the season with temperatures in the 50s, Wells allowed just five hits and a run over five innings in his seventh major league start. Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said before the game that Wells has already been penciled into the starting rotation for 2000.

The White Sox strung together five straight hits in the second, when they scored three two-out runs off Daniel Perkins (1-7). They added two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh.

Chicago scored in the second on Carlos Lee's RBI single, Josh Paul's run-scoring double and Jason Dellaero's RBI single.

Paul Konerko, who had three hits, singled in a run in the fifth and another run scored as Lee reached on an error. Konerko had another RBI single in the seventh.

Midre Cummings drove in the Twins' run with a single in the fourth.

Wells (4-1) walked one and struck out three.

Notes: Konerko had his first major league stolen base in the second. ... Josh Paul had hit first major league RBI in the same inning. ... Twins catcher Terry Steinbach, who bruised his right hand while catching a pitch Friday night, didn't play. ... It's the Twins' first eight-game losing streak since September 1998, when they dropped 10 straight. ... The White Sox have won seven of eight. ... Chicago has beaten Minnesota eight times in 11 games this season.
