Request For Parole, who was fifth in the Kentucky Derby, has a stress
fracture in his left front shin and will not compete in the June 8 Belmont
Stakes, reports trainer Steve Margolis.
"It's nothing major," Margolis said. "We X-rayed him Tuesday and found
this. Dr. Larry Bramlage said the prognosis on him returning to racing is
good. He's is going to evaluate the situation and at worst he'll have to
drill a couple of holes and put a screw in."
Margolis was looking forward to the Belmont after Request For Parole
drilled six furlongs in 1:11.80 Sunday at Churchill Downs.
"He had a real big work on Sunday," the trainer said. "It looked like he
cooled out great, but this popped up yesterday. He didn't have any shin
problems as a two-year-old. He's always been a durable horse. He'll get some
time off and I hope to get him back by the fall. I think he can be a real
nice four-year-old."
With Request For Parole's defection, there are 13 horses that are being
considered for the Belmont. They are: Artax Too, Essence of Dubai, Like A
Hero, Magic Weisner, Medaglia D'oro, Perfect Drift, Proud Citizen,
Puzzlement, Sarava, Sunday Break, Tracemark, War Emblem and Wiseman's Ferry.
