ARCADIA, Calif. -- Owner Jeffrey Sengara is gambling $90,000 that Bluesthestandard, a former $10,000 claimer, is the fastest sprinter in the United States.

Trainer Ted H. West said Sengara is prepared to supplement Bluesthestandard to the $1 million Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita on Oct 25, hoping that a home track advantage can result in a massive score for a horse claimed last winter for $50,000.

This year, Bluesthestandard has won 4 of 8 starts and $379,800. Two of the wins came in stakes - the Grade 2 Potrero Grande Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita in March and the Grade 3 Texas Mile at Lone Star in late April. Most recently, Bluesthestandard, 6, was third in the Grade 1 Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita on Oct. 5.

"Coming back quick is not a problem for him," West said. "He's such a tough horse he doesn't need a lot of time between races. Jeff wants to take a shot."

West was left with the impression that Bluesthestandard could have finished closer in the Ancient Title with a better start. West said that Bluesthestandard did not cooperate with the assistant starter and was standing awkwardly when the six-furlong race began.

Third throughout, Bluesthestandard finished 1 1/2 lengths behind Avanzado, who is not starting in the BC Sprint.

"He was fighting the starter," West said. "When he got quiet he was straddle-legged and he lost a length out of there. We'll work on the gate between now and then. I think he lost a little quickness."

The Ancient Title was Bluesthestandard's second start in a Grade 1. At Hollywood Park on July 5, Bluesthestandard finished third in the Triple Bend Handicap over seven furlongs but was demoted to fifth for causing interference.

With the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, a shot at the Sprint made more sense, he said.

"We'll have to be at our absolute and complete perfect," West said. "We wouldn't ship and supplement."

P Val gets mount on 'Gentleman'
Patrick Valenzuela has been booked to ride Yankee Gentleman in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, trainer John Sherriffs said Saturday.

Valenzuela rode Yankee Gentleman in an allowance race at Del Mar on Aug. 7, the first start of 2003 for the 4-year-old. Julie Krone rode Yankee Gentleman to a five-length victory in the Pirate's Bounty Handicap at Del Mar on Sept. 6 and a fourth-place finish in the Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap on Oct. 5.

"Pat rode him in his first race and we thought we'd try that again," Sherriffs said.

Owned by Marty Wygod, Yankee Gentleman will be a longshot in the Sprint.

Seabiscuit next for 'Summer'
Excess Summer, the winner of three consecutive stakes in the last two months, is being pointed for the $150,000 Seabiscuit Handicap over 1 1/16 miles on Oct. 25, trainer Jeff Mullins said.

Excess Summer won the Real Good Deal Stakes for California-breds and the restricted El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar prior to winning the Pomona Derby by five lengths at Fairplex Park on Sept. 27.

The Seabiscuit Handicap is on the Breeders' Cup undercard. Chinkapin, the winner of the Pomona Invitational on Sept. 28, is another candidate.
