March 21, 2005 | ESPN.com's NCAA Tournament coverage
Wow, the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament featured a lot of excitement. There have been shocks galore, with more No. 6 seeds alive (three) than No. 2 seeds (two).
A number of talented seniors, like Hakim Warrick and Ronny Turiaf, have finished off their collegiate careers. Coach Tom Brennan retired after Vermont fell to Michigan State in the second round. Of course, to get there, Brennan and Vermont upset Syracuse!
There have been a number of standout performances leading into the Sweet 16. It wasn't easy limiting my first-weekend All-Stars to a Super Six, because a number of other players merited consideration. Here's a look at my All-Into-the-Sweet-16 Team: the top players, co-coaches and diaper dandy.
THE PLAYERS | SUPER SIX
Andrew Bogut | Utah He had 24 points and 11 boards in the opening-round win over UTEP, then showed he didn't have to score to be valuable against Oklahoma. The Australian big man scored just 10 points but grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists. Bogut took just seven shots from the floor and showed why he's a team player and a winner.
Francisco Garcia | Louisville He scored 20-plus in both games, including 27 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette. Garcia led the Cardinals to a big lead against Georgia Tech, scoring 18 first-half points in the rout. He has been a PTPer for Rick Pitino, who was upset his team was given a No. 4 seed. So far, the Cardinals and Garcia have proven they're a team to watch.
Julius Hodge | NC State He made the game-winning play as the Wolfpack stunned Connecticut in Worcester, Mass. Hodge had 17 points and six assists in that win, and the versatile senior posted 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in an opening-round win over Charlotte.
Ronald Ross | Texas Tech Guard play has been a big plus for coach Robert Montgomery Knight's Red Raiders. A former walk-on, Ross has been brilliant so far, averaging 26 ppg in wins over UCLA and Gonzaga. Ross also grabbed nine boards against the Zags.
Salim Stoudamire | Arizona After scoring 17 points against defensive-minded Utah State, he had 28 big points, including five trifectas, against UAB.
Joah Tucker | Wisconsin-Milwaukee He scored 21 points against Alabama and then added a 23-point, six-assist effort vs. Boston College.
THE CO-COACHES
Bruce Pearl | Wisconsin-Milwaukee A No. 12 seed is in the Sweet 16. The last time it happened was 2003, and it was another Horizon League representative, Butler. Pearl's Panthers had a pair of quality wins, knocking off Alabama and Boston College. The 3-pointer has been a key weapon, as Wisconsin-Milwaukee hit 23 trifectas in the two wins.
Herb Sendek | NC State It seems that Mr. Sendek often gets criticized on the talk shows down on Tobacco Road. But he's a steady, quiet, successful coach who has his team in the Sweet 16. I hope some of the detractors will get off his back now. Beating Charlotte and defending champ Connecticut back-to-back isn't an easy feat.
THE DIAPER DANDY
Marvin Williams | North Carolina He had 20 points and eight rebounds against Oakland, then 20 points and 15 boards vs. Iowa State. He isn't playing like a freshman, baby! Villanova has to watch out for this outstanding youngster in the Sweet 16.
