Angels keep soaring

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

May 10, 2004 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down...

Anaheim Angels -- The Angels have won nine straight games and outfielder Vladimir Guerrero has enjoyed a terrific start. Now manager Mike Scioscia has to keep it going despite a lot of injuries to key players Darin Erstad, Garret Anderson, Tim Salmon and Jose Guillen.

Indiana Pacers -- The Pacers are up 2-0 against the Miami Heat and coach Rick Carlisle's team has won six straight playoff games by double figures.

Former Yankees (Clemens and Soriano) -- Two former Yankees are having a great start to their seasons. Roger Clemens' phenomenal start has helped push him to second on the all-time strikeout list and 6-0. Meanwhile, Alfonso Soriano went 6-for-6 in Saturday's wild 16-15 win over the Tigers.

Joey Sindelar -- Sindelar won his first PGA Tour title in 14 years with a win at the Wachovia Championship on Sunday.

Craig Biggio -- Biggio got his 2,500th career hit. Not bad for a guy from my alma mater, Seton Hall ... go Pirates!

Tubby Smith -- The Kentucky coach surprised me by appearing at the "Dick Vitale Sports Night" event in Sarasota to benefit the Boys and Girls clubs. Tubby also got one of the nation's premier recruiting classes by adding big man Randolph Morris.

New Orleans Hornets -- The Hornets proved how wacky the coaching profession is right now by firing Tim Floyd after just one season. Give me a break!

Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- The Devil Rays have lost five in a row and are sitting at 9-21. Lou Piniella has to be disappointed since his team was supposed to be better this season. One of my ESPN broadcast partners, Dan Shulman, and I bet dinner that the Devil Rays wouldn't finish in last place. This may be a tough one.

Arizona Diamondbacks -- The D-Backs have lost four straight and are sitting at 12-18 in last place in the NL West.

Middle school hoop coach --A New Jersey middle school basketball coach gave out a crybaby award at a banquet. Why would he humiliate the kid like that? Are you serious? You should give love to kids, not belittle them!

Dick Vitale coached the Detroit Pistons and the University of Detroit in the 1970s before broadcasting ESPN's first college basketball game in 1979 (he's been an ESPN analyst ever since). Send a question for Vitale for possible use on ESPNEWS.
