SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Dick's Stock Watch identifies whose stock is up and whose is down over the past week across the world of sports.

The Anaheim Angels fought hard and prevailed in a thrilling seven-game World Series. The key hit came in Game 6, when the Angels were down 5-0 in the seventh inning, and Scott Spiezio hit a three-run homer to bring the Angels back to life. Garret Anderson had the key hit in Game 7, a three-run double -- and Anaheim went on to celebrate.

Dallas Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith has been a class act for many years. Now he's the NFL's all-time leading rusher, passing Walter Payton on Sunday. Smith now has 16,743 yards in his illustrious career, and he has withstood the test of time. He has been a flat-out winner for the Cowboys and the kind of player the NFL can be proud of.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have landed the manager they needed in Lou Piniella. I really think he will give a boost to this franchise. I know I renewed my season tickets, baby!

Notre Dame's defense has been special all season long. The Irish got a huge win at Florida State. Those who have questioned Notre Dame this season have to think twice now. I can't say enough about the leadership displayed by coach Tyrone Willingham. Some may say he was the fifth or sixth choice, but AD Kevin White has to be thrilled with Willingham, who said from day one he was going to show this team how it could win.

One team Notre Dame has to still worry about is USC and quarterback Carson Palmer. Against Oregon, he had a huge day, throwing for 448 yards and five TDs as coach Pete Carroll's Trojans earned a big-time W!

It was a tough stretch for the coaching Bowdens. First Tommy and his Clemson Tigers got blown away Thursday on national TV by N.C. State. Then the Seminoles -- and Tommy's dad, Bobby -- lost at home to Notre Dame.

I was surprised to see the Oakland Athletics let manager Art Howe go away so easily. The Mets have landed Howe, who accomplished so much despite free-agent losses in Oakland.

Tennis star Jennifer Capriati has been suffering in Struggle City lately. This week, she lost 6-1, 6-1 to Alexandra Stevenson in a tournament in Austria.
