Hats off to the Lady Huskies

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

April 1
Here's a salute to coach Geno Auriemma and the UConn Lady Huskies. Are you kidding me? A perfect 39-0! That's absolutely awesome baby -- with a capital A! Talk about a team with focus and concentration. Most teams would have not survived the unbelievable effort of the Oklahoma Sooners.

Coach Sherri Coale and gang have to be mighty proud of a superb effort against one of the best teams EVER in women's basketball. Oklahoma finished the season 32-4 and was not a pushover by any means. When a team goes 39-0 with an average victory margin of almost 35 points per game -- that, my friends, is special. And it should be treated with the greatest respect.

Geno Auriemma and John Wooden are the only coaches to have multiple unbeaten seasons.
Geno has to be on cloud nine as he joins the Wizard of Westwood, former UCLA men's coach John Wooden, as the only other coach to have multiple unbeaten seasons. That's unheard of in this day and age. Remember this: The Lady Huskies take everybody's best shot. They've become like Duke in men's basketball, the UCLA teams of old, the New York Yankees and Notre Dame in football -- everybody plays at a higher level trying to knock them down a notch.

It blows my mind when I think about the numbers achieved by Geno in his career. Oh, baby! The Lasagna Man has done it in special fashion.

I've talked about the Dukies winning four consecutive ACC tournament titles in men's basketball -- but this guy has done it nine times in a row in the Big East. Think about that achievement -- nine consecutive Big East Championships! Now he has his third national title.

What a performance by UConn's frontcourt and by the dynamic duo on the perimeter. Two All-Americans, player of the year Sue Bird and super soph Diana Taurasi, played well. But it was the brilliant baseline trio of Asjha Jones, Swin Cash and Tamika Williams who combined for 31 rebounds and 51 points. UConn outrebounded Oklahoma 44-25, and that domination on the glass was a big, big factor.

It set off a wild celebration in Storrs, Conn., as the Lady Huskies became the toast of women's basketball. In fact, they were the toast of the entire basketball world by going 39-0. They earn my tribute, baby!

I was surprised when I walked in the lobby of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis on Sunday night and heard people talking about Connecticut's 12-point win as an upset, that the margin wasn't enough! What is this world coming too when a team wins by 12 and people think they've been beaten? That shows you how good that team is.

Auriemma and company are super proud, baby, and the beat will go on and on. He's the kind of guy who thinks about tomorrow and just doesn't rest on what he's achieved today. The recruiting phones are ringing off the hook, and this program will keep on rolling as long as Auriemma is on the sidelines.

Connecticut won it all and did it with C-L-A-S-S. It's time to consider this team as one of the best ever in women's basketball history.
