Elis, Gophers, Waves soar

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Feb. 11
Dick's Stock Watch identifies whose stock is up and whose is down over the past week across the world of sports.

Kobe Bryant did a super job at the NBA All-Star game, scoring 31 points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing five assists. Shame on the fans in Philadelphia for booing Kobe! Think about what this young man has accomplished in such a short period of time. He's only 23 years old and he's a superstar, the best of the best, with two championship rings and a bright future, baby!

How about Pepperdine, Yale and Minnesota -- and we're not talking about a debate. These three schools have been getting it done on the college hoop hardwood ...

Pepperdine has won 12 in a row. Coach Paul Westphal's Waves are unbeaten in WCC play, and that league includes Gonzaga! Pepperdine beat coach Mark Few's Zags (though they meet again this weekend). Westphal's team also has Ws over UCLA, USC and BYU.

Yale moved into first place in the Ivy League with wins over Princeton and Penn. Remember this name: James Jones, the Yale coach, has done a remarkable job. The Elis beat Clemson of the ACC and Penn State of the Big Ten! Hey, the Prez, George Bush, should travel to New Haven, Conn., to catch a game, since Yale is his alma mater.

Minnesota has been on a roll, and coach Dan Monson's Golden Gophers got a big road win at Iowa this past weekend. Rick Rickert, the 6-foot-11 diaper dandy, will be the next big star out of the Midwest.

And Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon did it again, winning the MVP of the Pro Bowl for the second straight year. Gannon had a brilliant stretch, completing 8-of-10 passes to lead the AFC past the NFC in a wild game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Can someone tell me what the Glazers are doing in their coaching hunt? Marvin Lewis looked like a lock and then that fell through. This has not been handled well, and I'm a Bucs season ticket holder, so I pay some of the money for their salaries!

Iowa basketball: It's hard to figure this program out lately. The Hawkeyes have a solid young coach in Steve Alford, but the team has fallen on hard times, down to 15-10 overall. There were such high hopes and expectations going into the season. The lack of solid point-guard play has been a factor; you can't win consistently in college basketball without it.
