Dick's Stock Watch identifies whose stock is up and whose is down over the past week across the world of sports.
STOCK UP: Patriots, Rutgers, Kings
The New England Patriots surprised the sports world by upsetting the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl. Bill Belichick did a great job with this team. QB Tom Brady showed a lot of guts marching New England down the field in the final drive.
The Patriots showed a lot of heart all throughout the playoffs. They had pride and played as a team when everyone said they couldn't do it. Guys like Troy Brown, David Patten, Antowain Smith, Ty Law and company had a lot to prove. I thought it said a lot the way they came out, as a team, during player introductions.
It's time to give the Rutgers some publicity. I have always felt this was a school with tremendous potential because you could recruit in New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey. Gary Waters has done a great job after a slow start. The Scarlet Knights had a big week, beating Connecticut and Syracuse. That marked the first time Rutgers beat two Top 25 teams in the same week.
The Sacramento Kings have the best record in the NBA. Chris Webber and company have won 10 of 11 games and sit 36-10 overall. On Sunday, the Kings won at Minnesota; the Timberwolves are tough to beat at home (only two losses there before Sacramento's win).
STOCK DOWN: Illinois, Sonics, Terry Glenn
Illinois has been a bit of a mystery lately. Coach Bill Self's team was supposed to be a Final Four contender. Instead, the Illini lost again on Sunday, beaten at home by a banged up Michigan State squad. That snapped Illinois' home win streak at 28. The Illini will have to get it together to make any run at the Big Ten tourney and the NCAAs.
The Seattle SuperSonics ... how do you lose at home to the Chicago Bulls? We could have had Mike Golic, Mike Greenberg, Dan Patrick, Tony Kornheiser and yours truly and given the Bulls a game, baby!
There was one Patriot who was not a factor at the Super Bowl: Terry Glenn. Come on, grow up! He sued the week of the Super Bowl. He's so talented yet he couldn't contribute.
