FOUNTAIN, Colo. -- Greg Biffle won the Grainger.com 200 on
Sunday, leading a one-two sweep for Roush Racing and breaking an
11-race victory drought on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
Biffle, who started third, dominated the 200-mile race at Pikes
Peak International Raceway, leading 170 of the 200 laps on the mile
oval. The Ford driver took the lead for good on the 149th lap,
passing Randy Tolsma in heavy traffic on the front stretch.
Teammate Kurt Busch followed Biffle around Tolsma's Dodge to
take second. He cut the margin to less than a second with 16 laps
remaining, but Biffle pushed for final margin to 4.281 seconds.
"I think this track really owed me one," said Biffle, who had
a truck capable of winning last year's race before breaking a
transmission. "I knew we were getting close to this win and it's
really a relief -- not really to the team but it relieves some of
the emphasis the media has put on the fact that we haven't won."
Five caution periods cut Biffle's average speed to 99.778 mph.
He won $46,235 for his 10th series victory, and first since Sept.
24, 1999, in Las Vegas.
Busch, a rookie, finished second for the third time in nine
events this season. Pole-starter Andy Houston, who led the first
six laps, finished third in a Chevrolet.
Jack Sprague was fourth in another Chevy, followed by Dennis
Setzer, Ricky Hendrick, Randy Renfrow, Bryan Reffner, Scott Riggs
and Marty Houston.
Sprague, whose eighth consecutive top-five finish matched a
series record, moved into the series point lead for the first time
this year. The two-time champion holds a 56-point lead over Mike
Wallace, who entered the race with a 40-point advantage.
Wallace had a disastrous afternoon, dropping out after 53 laps
after making an unscheduled pit stop for a flat tire then hitting
the wall to trigger the race's second caution. He finished 33rd in
the 35-truck field.
Biffle moved from fifth to third in the standings, 72 points
behind Sprague. | |
