Rahal leaving CART to run Jaguar in 2001

 Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bobby Rahal, a three-time CART champion and a former Indianapolis 500 winner, will run the Formula One team Jaguar Racing next year.

Rahal will resign as interim chief executive officer and president of CART. He also runs his own team in the open-wheel series but does not intend to give that up.

Neil Ressler, chairman of the Jaguar team, made the announcement in Indianapolis, with the U.S. Grand Prix set for Sunday. Ressler will remain in his post with Rahal running the team on a day-to-day basis, beginning Dec. 1.

"Of course, Bobby Rahal's driving career speaks for itself and needs no endorsement from me," Ressler said.

"His knowledge of racing at the highest level together with his business acumen and demonstrated leadership capability uniquely qualifies him to join us at Jaguar Racing."

Jaguar has earned only three points this season, a major disappointment for the first-year team that took over Stewart Ford after last season.
