PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Fire announced Tuesday that coach-general manager Linda Hargrove will not have her contract renewed. The Seattle Storm also lost its coach/general manager, Lin Dunn, on Tuesday when she resigned. The only coach in franchise history, Hargrove posted a 37-59 mark in three years, going 16-16 in 2002 and missing the playoffs with another late-season collapse. In three years, Portland's record in August was 2-15. It lost its final four games in 2000, ended the 2001 season with a 10-game skid and dropped four in a row and seven of its last nine to close 2002. Hargrove's contract expired Aug. 31. "Linda is an incredible person who has dedicated a tremendous amount of time to help build this franchise," said Fire vice president of basketball operations Sandi Butler. "But looking down the road at the future of our organization, I felt this decision was in the best interest of our team." The Fire went 10-22 during their expansion season of 2000 and improved only one game in 2001. They had a four-game lead for the final postseason berth this year before falling apart. "Building the Fire to be competitive in the Western Conference was really difficult and I will take a much-needed break," Hargrove said. "The franchise is on the verge of great things and I look forward to watching the progress continue." The team also announced that assistant coaches Jessie Kenlaw and Tom Newell will not return. |
