Phillips leads Liberty past Shock

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Tari Phillips had 20 points and seven rebounds as the New York Liberty won their sixth straight game by beating the Detroit Shock 80-67 Wednesday.

The Liberty (16-5), who took a half-game lead over the Cleveland Rockers in the Eastern Conference, shot 57.4 percent from the field and scored 18 points off 17 Shock turnovers.

Detroit (5-14) has lost three straight games and 11 of its last 13. The Shock are 2-8 at home.

Phillips scored nine straight points for the Liberty to open a 41-29 lead with about a minute left in the first half.

Tamika Whitmore had 17 points for the Liberty, going 8-of-10 from the field. Reserve Becky Hammon contributed 17 points and five rebounds, Vickie Johnson had 10 points, and Teresa Weatherspoon added six points and seven assists.

The Shock, last in the league in field-goal defense, were outscored 36-26 in the paint.

Astou Ndiaye-Diatta led the Shock with 19 points and five rebounds, but she picked up four fouls in the first half. Wendy Palmer, Elena Tornikidou and Edwina Brown each scored 11.
