WIMBLEDON, England -- Top-seeded Pete Sampras will begin his pursuit of a seventh Wimbledon title Monday against Czech Jiri Vanek.

In the tournament draw held Tuesday, second-seeded Andre Agassi was paired against a qualifier.

DOWN THE ROAD
Among the most interesting potential quarterfinal matchups:

Men:
  • Sampras vs. Hewitt
  • Norman vs. either Krajicek or Pioline
  • Rafter against Kafelnikov, Kuerten or Kiefer
  • Agassi against Philippoussis or Henman

    Women:
  • Hingis vs. Venus Williams
  • C. Martinez vs. S. Williams
  • Pierce vs. Tauziat
  • Davenport vs. Seles
  • Agassi could face fellow American Todd Martin in the second round. Sampras' second-round opponent will be the winner of the match between dangerous 20-year-old Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero and veteran Karol Kucera, who defeated Agassi in the second round of the French Open.

Also in Sampras' half of the draw are Richard Krajicek, the 1996 champion and the only player to beat Sampras at Wimbledon since 1994, and Lleyton Hewitt, the 19-year-old Australian who defeated Sampras in the Queen's Club final Sunday.

Agassi's half of the bracket includes French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten, Mark Philippoussis, Marat Safin and two-time U.S. champion Patrick Rafter.

Germany's Tommy Haas and Nicolas Kiefer, both ranked in the top 25, renew their rivalry in the most intriguing men's first-round match.

Tim Henman, seeded No. 8, could face three-time runner-up Goran Ivanisevic in the second round. Ivanisevic, still one of the fastest servers in the game, is unseeded for the first time since 1990.

In the women's draw, defending champion Lindsay Davenport drew her doubles partner, Corina Morariu, in the first round. Top-seeded Martina Hingis plays Spain's Angeles Montolio.

Sisters Venus and Serena Williams can't meet until the semifinals. Venus is seeded fifth and Serena eighth.

French Open champion Mary Pierce, seeded third, will open against Australia's Nicole Pratt.

A top first-round women's match has unseeded Anna Kournikova vs. No. 10 Sandrine Testud.

The Duke of Windsor was on hand to inaugurate Wimbledon's new Millennium Building before the draw. The building, constructed on the site of the old No. 1 court, provides new facilities for players, media and officials.
