INDIAN WELLS, Calif. Resplendent in a hot pink dress,
Serena Williams needed 67 minutes Saturday to advance to the second
round of the Tennis Masters Series.
In the only third-round match played Saturday, top-seeded
Martina Hingis stopped Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain in 57
minutes 6-3, 6-0.
Hingis took charge after the two exchanged service breaks in the
opening set and won the final nine games of the match.
The 19-year-old Williams, seeded seventh, beat Adriana Gersi of
the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2, using her arsenal of aces, some
clocked at 110 mph, and a powerful variety of strokes to overpower
her foe.
Asked what color her dress was, Williams said: "Hot pink for a
hot girl. Today I was trying a few different techniques. I wanted
to attack her second serve and I wanted to go for a few more drop
shots, hit some angles."
Eighth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia was an easy winner over
Kristina Brandi 6-2, 6-0, but ninth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of
France was upset by Evie Dominikovic of Australia 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
Veteran Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, seeded 10th, was extended to
almost two hours before beating American Jennifer Hopkins 6-0, 6-7
(5), 6-4.
The $2.05 million women's tournament will continue for another
week, while the men's $2.45 million competition starts Monday at
the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
