INDIAN WELLS, Calif. Lilia Osterloh surprised Ruxandra
Dragomir in the opening round of the Tennis Masters Series-Indian
Wells on Thursday, defeating the Romanian 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
Dragomir, ranked 41st in the world, was the highest ranked
player to see action on the second day of the $2.05 million hard
court tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Kveta Hrdlickova of the Czech Republic beat Shinobu Asagoe of
Japan 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to a second-round meeting against
top-seeded Martina Hingis.
Six of the eight players who made their debut at Indian Wells
are still in the competition, including Justine Henin of Belgium.
Henin had a first-round bye, as did a total of 32 players in the
128 draw.
The men's competition starts Monday and has a $2.45 million
purse. All of the top men, including Australian Open champion Andre
Agassi and six-time Wimbledon title holder Pete Sampras, are
expected. The only player missing is U.S. Open champion Marat
Safin, who is injured.
