Dokic's fall leaves two seeds in bottom half of draw

PARIS -- Fifteenth seed Jelena Dokic slumped to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 defeat at the hands of 131st-ranked qualifier Petra Mandula in the French Open third round on Friday.

The Hungarian's victory leaves the bottom half of the women's draw in the $9.6 million clay-court Grand Slam with just two seeds, Belgians Kim Clijsters, seeded 12th, and Justine Henin, seeded 14th.

Dokic, who won her first title at the Italian Open last month, looked to be cruising to victory when she wrapped the first set up.

But Mandula, at 20 two years older than the Yugoslav, fought back with some brave baseline play.

Belgian 12th and 14th seeds Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin continued their seemingly effortless progress through the field at the French Open on Friday.

Clijsters defeated Spain's Marta Marrero 6-2, 6-2, while Henin celebrated her 19th birthday with a confident 6-3 6-4 victory over Virginie Razzano of France.

Clijsters, along with Henin and Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic, is one of only three seeds left in the bottom half of the draw, which is opening up perfectly for her.

"I feel good, I am feeling a lot better on this clay than I was last year," said Clijsters, who has not dropped a set and will next play Henrieta Nagyova.

"I think I have improved and that I can definitely play even better," she added. "I am confident and every win I get makes me more and more confident."

In other early third-round action, two unseeded Italian women reached the fourth round.

Grande beat Spaniard Cristina Torrens Valero 6-3, 6-1 and Silvia Farina Elia defeated Czech Daja Bedanova 7-5, 7-6.

Barbara Schett, the conqueror of second seed Venus Williams in the first round, also continued her progress, the Austrian knocking out another Spaniard, Nuria Llagostera, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.

There is now only one Spanish woman left in the draw, last year's runner-up Conchita Martinez.
