Serena says she wants to focus on singles Associated Press
PARIS Sisters Venus and Serena Williams pulled out of the
French Open doubles Wednesday, a title they won two years ago.
The fifth-seeded pair withdrew because Serena wanted to
concentrate on her singles.
"I am looking forward to a successful French Open and want to
focus all my energy toward doing the best that I can in the
singles," Serena said.
Seeded sixth in singles, Serena Williams defeated Sarah
Pitkowski of France 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in her first-round match
Tuesday. She was playing her first tournament since March.
Venus Williams, seeded No. 2 in the year's second Grand Slam
tournament, was upset Monday by Austria's Barbara Schett 6-4, 6-4.
The Williams sisters play doubles only occasionally, but
dominate when they do. The won the Australian Open in January and
Wimbledon and the Olympics last year. In 1999, they won the U.S.
Open as well as the French Open. Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories
