Davenport, Hingis will be in final

By Pam Shriver
Special to ESPN.com

MELBOURNE, Australia -- The semifinal matchups are a tough call because of the talent remaining with three of the top four players still in it. In addition, three of those singles players are in the doubles semifinals tonight, which shows how strong women's doubles play has become.

Pam's Picks
Pam Shriver
Shriver
Former WTA Tour pro Pam Shriver is providing ESPN.com with in-depth analysis throughout the Australian Open. Shriver, a tennis analyst for ESPN, reached a high ranking of No. 3 in singles play. She won 21 singles and 112 doubles titles, including 22 Grand Slams.

Singles
Lindsay Davenport (2) vs.
Jennifer Capriati (12)

This is a rematch of last year's semifinal. Expect a classic duel of heavy hitting from the baseline. Capriati is playing better than last year, while Davenport is not playing as well as she did last year. This match could be very close. Davenport will probably win it if for no other reason than that she's proved she can. She's won five semifinals at major tournaments in the past two years, while Capriati has never won one. Until Capriati does, it's hard to go with her. Pick: Davenport

Martina Hingis (1) vs. Venus Williams (3)
Venus has beaten Hingis their past two majors meetings: the Wimbledon quarterfinals the U.S. Open semifinals, both close third-set victories. Hingis has never beaten the Williams sisters back to back, but sooner or later she will and, going on a hunch, it could be this today. If Venus was playing better going into this you would pick her to win, but she is struggling. Unless she starts playing the way she needs to, she won't beat Hingis. In the two Grand Slams that Venus has won, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2000, she raised her level of play when she had to. This match is another classic example of a time when she needs to raise the bar. Pick: Hingis

Doubles
Martina Hingis and Monica Seles vs. Serena and Venus Williams
Hingis and Seles playing the Williamses is one of the great semifinals in women's Grand Slam doubles history. It puts four strong personalities and accomplished singles players on the doubles court. At a warmup tournament in Sydney, Hingis and Seles defeated the Williamses during the first round 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2). However, that was the first match Venus had played in months, and she should be playing a lot better now.

Also, two of the four already will have played a long singles match in the same day. Serena was feeling ill yesterday. There are too many intangibles to be able to pick. If both teams are playing well, the Williamses have too much power, cover too much court and are too intimidating. Pick: Too close to call

Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu (7) vs.
Nicole Arendt and Ai Sugiyama (2), Japan

You have to give the edge to Davenport and Morariu, who won Wimbledon together last year. They also both did well here last year with different partners as Davenport was a runner-up and Morariu reached the semis. Pick: Davenport and Morariu
