Triestina gives Roma a scare

[Reuters]

MILAN -- AS Roma scraped into the last eight of the Italian Cup after winning its third round tie against Serie B club Triestina 4-1 on penalties on Tuesday.

There was all to play for at the Olympic stadium after the first leg in the northeastern city of Trieste had ended 1-1 two weeks ago.

Roma went ahead in the 34th minute when its Brazilian midfielder Francisco Lima fired a shot across the face of the area and Trieste defender Domenico Maietta miskicked the ball into his own net.

But Trieste, who showed why the club currently leads Serie B, played some determined football and drew level on 72 minutes when Dino Fava headed in a cross from Jehad Muntasser.

Trieste had midfielder Alessandro Budel sent off three minutes from the end of normal time for a second bookable offense and was forced to play the entire half-hour of extra time with 10 men.

With Roma unable to break through, the tie was settled on penalties. Fabio Capello's side was saved embarrassment by its keeper Ivan Pelizzoli who kept out spot kicks from Trieste's Francesco Bega and Mirco Gubellini as Roma won the shootout 4-1.

Serie A leaders AC Milan faces Serie B side Ancona in Wednesday's ties.
