Faria's goal, assist lead Metros

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rodrigo Faria had a goal and an assist to lead the New York-New Jersey MetroStars to a 2-1 victory over D.C. United on Wednesday night.

Faria scored in the 10th minute, taking a centering pass from Petter Villegas and scoring past United goalkeeper Mike Ammann.

Faria set up the MetroStars' second goal, sending a long pass down the left wing to Mark Chung, who moved past defender Scott Vermillion and scored from 5 yards.

Faria has three goals and two assists against Washington this season.

D.C. United pressured MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard throughout.

Howard kicked away a 20-yard shot by Santino Quaranta in the 27th minute, outraced Abdul Thompson Conteh for a loose ball six minutes later and then robbed Conteh on a shot from close range.

Howard also stopped a shot from close range by Craig Ziadie in the 54th minute, and made a diving save on shot from 25 yards by Carey Talley.

Mark Lisi scored in the 87th minute for United (6-14-2).

The MetroStars improved to 11-8-3.
