Presthus makes nine saves

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- John Wilmar Perez had a goal and an assist and Tom Presthus made nine saves as the Columbus Crew beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 Saturday night.

Ansil Elcock's goal three minutes into the second half snapped a 1-all tie.

Brian McBride began the play that led to the eventual winning goal. He drew defenders and sent a pass to Perez, who took a shot that Jeff Cunningham redirected toward Elcock. Elcock scored on a shot that deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net.

San Jose (10-4-5) tied the game in the 44th-minute on a goal by Jeff Agoos. Landon Donovan lifted a pass over a Crew defender to Agoos at the top of the box. Presthus got a piece of Agoos' shot from 15 yards, but the ball rolled into the net. Ronald Cerritos also assisted on the goal.

Perez opened the scoring in the 11th minute, scoring from 5 yards on a give-and-go play with Cunningham.

San Jose outshot Columbus 17-10, and had an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Presthus tied a career record with nine saves. He has had two other nine-save games this season. Two of Presthus' saves came on headers by Cerritos from 6 yards in the 78th and 85th minutes

Columbus, playing in front of 20,273, improved to 4-0-3 at home since coach Greg Andrulis replaced Tom Fitzgerald.
