E-Quakes delight in draw

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The San Jose Earthquakes and New York-New Jersey MetroStars are heading in different directions, and it's not hard to figure out which one is heading south.

In the Earthquakes' locker room after a 0-0 tie with the MetroStars on Saturday night, there were smiles and talk of keeping the team-record and current league-best 10-game unbeaten streak (6-0-4) going.

"Coming in here, the only thing we were thinking about was either getting one point or three, that's it," San Jose rookie coach Frank Yallop said. "It's like you get on a run, and all you are thinking about is keeping it going."

Miami also extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games on Saturday night with a 3-3 tie with Los Angeles.

Down the hall at Giants Stadium, the MetroStars spoke of changes after their winless streak reached five games (0-3-2)

"I guarantee if things don't turn around in the next couple of days there will be changes," said New York-New Jersey defender Steve Jolley, whose header late in overtime might have been his team's best chance.

Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon only had to make average four saves.

"Everyone goes through slumps, be it one game or 10 games or 20 games," MetroStars defender Mike Petke said. "It's not a matter of going through the slump, it's a matter of finding a way out of it. We have to get out of it quickly or management will fix it by making trades or shuffling things."

Prior to Jolley's late shot, Cannon's toughest save was in the 36th minute on an off-balance shot from the top of the box by Rodrigo Faria.

"To be honest I didn't have anything difficult tonight," Cannon said. "The defense did a great job."

New York-New Jersey had two good chances that missed the net. Adolfo Valencia hit the side of the net with a bad-angle shot in close in the 35th minute, and Cordt Weinstein, playing in his first MLS game, missed the net from 10 yards with less than 10 minutes to go.

Howard's toughest stop was a punch save against Manny Lagos breaking in from the left wing in the 12th minute. Howard also made a save on a weak bicycle kick by Dwayne DeRosario late in the first half. He had five saves.

The tie extended the Earthquakes' unbeaten streak against New York-New Jersey to seven games (5-0-2). The MetroStars' last win was a 4-3 decision on April 25, 1998. New York-New Jersey hasn't scored against San Jose in 438 minutes, dating to Sept. 22, 1999.

New York-New Jersey had three key players sidelined with knee injuries -- forward Clint Mathis, midfielder Petter Villegas and defender Steve Shak.

San Jose played without defender Jeff Agoos and forward Landon Donovan. Agoos played with the United States national team in a 0-0 tie in a World Cup qualifier with Jamaica on Saturday. Donovan is playing with the U.S under-20 national team.
