Earthquakes settle for a tie

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- John Spencer's goal in the 75th minute helped the Colorado Rapids tie the San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 Wednesday night.

The tie ended San Jose's streak of four consecutive wins. The Earthquakes (5-2-3) had the best May performance in club history with a 4-0-2 record.

"I'm disappointed not to win, but I'm pleased that we didn't lose the game," Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop said.

Richard Mulrooney initiated the Earthquakes' scoring drive in the 40th minute with a cross to Manny Lagos, whose header hit the crossbar and bounced back onto the field. Following a scuffle in front of the goal, forward Landon Donovan crossed the ball to the right side to Ian Russell, who crossed to Ronald Cerritos in front of the goal. Cerritos scored on a header.

The temperature reached 100 degrees at kickoff, and tempers flared in the match. The Rapids' Chris Martinez and Ross Paule received yellow cards and teammate Chris Dawes was ejected for dangerous play. The Earthquakes' Troy Dayak and Jimmy Conrad also received yellow cards.

Dayak's yellow card in the 75th minute was costly to the Earthquakes. On the ensuing free kick, Spencer's shot hit the crossbar and ricocheted to teammate Marcelo Balboa, who headed the ball back to Spencer. Spencer's goal earned the Rapids (2-6-3) the tie.

"Colorado is a physical team. They're big boys. But we still created enough chances. It was not a pretty game," Yallop said.
