Cannon unblemished in 218 minutes

DALLAS (AP) -- San Jose goalie Joe Cannon, who hasn't yielded a goal in his last 218 minutes in goal, finished with his third shutout of the season and five saves as the Earthquakes defeated the Dallas Burn 2-0 Wednesday night.

"I've just been steady and consistent all year long," Cannon said. "The back line has been awesome this year, and that's been a big difference."

"I don't have to worry about if we're going to score, it's been more along the line of better team play," he said.

Wednesday's victory gives the Earthquakes a 5-2-1 record. The team remains in first place in the Major League Soccer Western Division. Dallas dropped to 3-4-1.

Earthquakes forward Ronald Cerritos scored the game's first goal in the 15th minute when he knocked a header past Burn goalie Matt Jordan. Richard Mulrooney crossed a pass to midfielder Wade Barrett who found Cerritos just outside the goalie box to set up the goal.

San Jose's Dwayne DeRosario closed out the scoring in the 90th minute when he fired a shot into the left upper corner, Barrett assisted on the goal. DeRosario was knocked down by Richard Farrer, but got up to get free and get an open look at the goal.

The Burn had plenty of opportunity to score early in the game, as they outshot San Jose 7-5 in the first half. Chad Deering and Bobby Rhine each had point-blank shots from inside the penalty box, which they missed early on.

"We were a bit lucky to escape the first half without a goal against," Cannon said.

The Burn played without forward Jorge Rodriguez, the team leader in goals scored. Rodriguez missed the game because he is playing for the El Salvador National Team.

The best scoring opportunity for the Burn came in the 80th minute. Ariel Graziani found Jason Kreis just outside the penalty box, but Cannon made a diving stop.
