DENVER (AP) _ Jim Rooney scored in the 79th minute as the Miami Fusion beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Defender Tyrone Marshall faked a shot and slid the ball to Rooney. Goalkeeper David Kramer went for the fake, leaving the goal virtually open for Rooney, who scored on a 7-yard shot.

Miami (6-1-1) beat Colorado (2-6-1) for the second time this season to move into a first-place tie with New York-New Jersey in the Eastern Division.

The Fusion played without two top scorers. Preki missed the game because of a strained hamstring, and Diego Serna is sidelined by a knee injury.
