San Jose first to shut out K.C. this season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City goalie Tony Meola made a sprawling one-handed save to thwart San Jose's best scoring chance and the Wizards tied the Earthquakes 0-0 on Saturday night.

Meola's 16 shutouts last season set an MLS record and earned him the league's MVP award.

San Jose's Joe Cannon, meanwhile, became the first goalie this year to blank defending champion Kansas City (3-1-1), which entered the game with a league-leading nine goals.

Meola made his sparkling save six minutes before halftime, blocking Earthquakes midfielder Manuel Lagos' shot.

The Wizards had a flurry of shots late in the second half but couldn't convert. Their best chance came with seven minutes left, when Matt McKeon's free kick sailed inches wide.

San Jose's Dwayne DeRosario sent a shot wide of the right post during a counterattack in overtime.

San Jose is 1-2-1.
