Wizards storm past Galaxy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chris Brown and Chris Klein scored goals as the Kansas City Wizards beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 Saturday night in a game played through severe weather.

The game was suspended in the 81st minute due to lightning, and resumed an hour later. It was the second major storm to pass through the area Saturday.

Greg Vanney scored off his own deflected penalty kick in the 80th minute for the Galaxy.

Brown scored off a misdirected cross by the Wizards Mo Johnston. Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman punched at the ball, barely deflecting it to the feet of Brown, who scored on a right-footed shot off the bounce for his first goal since 1999.

Klein's goal came in the 53rd minute. Streaking down the right side, he beat two defenders and put the ball to Hartman's left.

Los Angeles narrowed the gap in the 80th minute. After Galaxy forward Sasha Victorine was brought down in the box, Vanney's subsequent penalty kick was deflected by 2000 MLS MVP Tony Meola. The rebound bounced to Vanney's feet, and he scored his first goal of the season.

After the 57-minute delay, defender Ezra Hendrickson got the best attempt to tie the game for Los Angeles, but his shot from 12 feet went wide right.
