KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tony Meola extended his Major League Soccer-record shutout streak to 615 minutes as the Kansas City Wizards beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 on Saturday night.
The sometimes U.S. national team goalkeeper made four saves in
recording his sixth straight shutout and league-leading ninth of
the season. He has allowed just four goals this season.
Peter Vermes and Miklos Molnar scored for the Wizards, who
improved to 9-0-2 to pass their victory total of last season
(8-24-0). San Jose dropped to 2-6-3.
Vermes finished a long cross from Chris Henderson in the 36th
minute for his first goal of the season. Molnar's team-leading
seventh goal, also on a feed from Henderson, made it 2-0 in the
90th minute.
San Jose's Richard Mulrooney was ejected in the 79th minute when
he drew a red card for a rough foul.
A crowd of 17,272 attended the game, the Wizards' largest home
crowd of the year.
