BOX SCORE
SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- The San Jose Earthquakes unleashed an offensive barrage as midfielder Ronald Cerritos scored twice and added an assist in a 5-0 victory over the Dallas Burn. Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon recorded his third shutout of the season, one behind Kansas City Wizards netminder Tony Meola for the league lead. Cerritos ghave the Earthquakes the lead in the 10th minute, putting a penalty kick past Burn keeper Matt Jordan. He netted his second goal in the 36th minute, breaking free of his marker and heading a corner kick into the back of the net. Newcomer Abdul Thompson Conteh also scored twice for the Earthquakes, including a scorcher in the 39th minute of play. Cannon launched a long pass to Cerritos, who played the ball forward into the Dallas penalty area. Conteh muscled his way past the Burn defense and unleashed a blast past Jordan into the far side netting. Conteh scored his second goal in the 39th minute, when a cross from Iain Russell pulled Jordan off of the goal line. Conteh collected the cross and hammered it past Jordan for the tally. Dario Brose scored the other goal, catching the Burn by surprise. As Dallas tried to generate a counterattack from deep within their own territory, Drose seized upon a poor clearance and scored a long-distance goal. It was his first of 2000 and the fifth of his career. San Jose (2-2-1, 7 points) travels to Tampa Bay on Wednesday, while Dallas (3-3, 9 points) looks to recover from next Saturday when it hosts Columbus.
