LAS VEGAS -- With the top players are going at it on the court in front of lots of NCAA coaches, the commitment rumors are heating up in the desert this week.
Here's a roundup of the latest from Big Time Tournament in Vegas:
LeBron James, the injured rising senior (St. Vincent-St. Mary/Akron, Ohio),
was at the Big Time on Tuesday, watching his buddy Sebastian Telfair, the
rising junior from Brooklyn, play for the Juice All-Stars.
The nation's top rising senior point guard, 6-3 Mustafa Shakur (Friends Central
H.S./Philadelphia, Penn.), suffered a hip pointer playing for the Hunting Park
Warriors out of Philadelphia, and is day to day.
Same prognosis for 6-11 rising senior Brian Butch (West H.S./Appleton, Wis.) of Fox Valley Skillz, who was hurt on Monday when he was low-bridged.
Rising 6-7 senior Leon Powe (Oakland Tech H.S./Oakland, Calif.), one of the country's top dozen players, gave a verbal commitment to Cal-Berkeley on Wednesday.
It's easy to see why head coach Gary DeCesare has one of the country's top high school programs at St. Raymond High in Bronx, New York. His players, 5-10 rising
senior point guard Daon Merrritt, 6-5 rising junior Brian Laing, 6-3 rising
senior Louie McCroskey, 6-7 rising junior Gavin Grant and 6-3 rising senior
Tariq Atkins, are the talent core of the New York Ravens program.
Yes, that's former NBA player and current television commentator Reggie Theus on the bench, serving as an assistant coach for the Southern California All-Stars.
After getting an unsatisfactory effort from his starters on Monday, Ft.
Sooy-No Limit head coach Verdell Jones, Jr. benched his starting five for the
entire first half and a significant portion of the second half of a game on
Tuesday. Ft. Sooy, one of the top travel teams this spring/summer, still came
out victorious.
6-3 rising senior point guard Ryan Appleby (Stanwood
H.S./Stanwood, Wash.), who is playing with the Emerald City Pioneers at the
Big Time, has given a verbal commitment to Florida. We also heard through the Big Time grapevine that Florida has also received a scholarship commitment from 6-1
guard Lee Humphrey (Maryville H.S./Maryville, Tenn.)
