ESPN.com nets high honors

May 1, 2000

ESPN.com, part of GO.com (NYSE:GO), has received several industry-wide honors recently, cementing its position as the foremost producer of Internet sports content. "We are honored to be recognized as the standard by which all other sports sites are measured," said John Skipper, senior vice president and general manager, ESPN Internet Group. "We pride ourselves in providing the most in-depth sports news and statistics packages, as well as the most robust games and interactive features than anyone else on the Internet."

Among the recent honors garnered by ESPN.com:

  • In its April 2000 "Best of the Web" issue, Brill's Content cited ESPN.com as Best Overall Sports Site: "ESPN led the revolution in television sports coverage, and it continues to lead the revolution in Internet sports coverage. ESPN is anxious to find new ways of creating connections between its television and Internet content, so look for more developments in that area."

  • On April 20, the International Web Page Awards, the largest international Web site design festival on the Internet, honored ESPN.com with a Creative Excellence Award in recognition of the site's design, content and usability.

  • In a March 27 column, ZDNET AnchorDesk noted that ESPN.com ranked first among sports sites in a Usability test conducted by Webcriteria that measures quality of user experience: "ESPN.com uses space well, keeping pages short while using images sparingly. ESPN's site is swift and accessible. Finding the news is as simple as loading the home page. ESPN's triumph comes from its easy-to-scan links through the site."

  • Last month, the Fantasy Sports Players Association handed ESPN.com its Business of the Year Award in recognition of the site's content, fairness of games and usability.

  • In its February 28 "Best of the Web" issue, Forbes named ESPN.com its top sports site for the second straight time: "Newly redesigned, ESPN.com continues to score big. Its coverage of major sports news remains topflight and its scores, stats and player info, a snap to navigate. Particularly noteworthy: ESPN's well-run fantasy leagues, and a GameCast feature that allows you to follow games in real-time via diagrams and text play-by-play. The place for breaking sports stories - particularly trade rumors and the like."

GO.com was created as part of the recent merger between Infoseek Corporation and The Walt Disney Company's online unit, Buena Vista Internet Group (BVIG). GO.com oversees many of the Web's most popular sites and services, including the GO Network portal, ABC.com, ABCNEWS.com, Disney.com, Disneystore.com, DisneyTravel.com, ESPN.com, EXPN.com, NFL.com, NBA.com, NASCAR Online, ESPNstore.com, ABCsports.com, Family.com and Mr. Showbiz.
