Internet's Timeliness and Content on TV

ESPNEWS, the nation's only 24-hour sports news television network, will debut a new format combining real-time scores and updates with live cut-ins to select games, box scores, and additional ESPN.com content and interactivity beginning September 7, ESPN's 22nd anniversary, at 4:00 p.m. ET. In development for over a year, the network's relaunch is the most elaborate attempt in sports television to harness the timeliness and content of the Internet in a streamlined and viewer-friendly mode.

With the integration of ESPN.com chats, analysis, polls and expansive content into its newscasts, live press conferences, ESPN Radio simulcasts, and coverage of breaking news, ESPNEWS will prove to be even more valuable to television sports fans. The network's new graphic elements provide a seamless transference of sports data generated from the Internet.

"This relaunch celebrates our 22nd anniversary and reflects a multi-media company poised to serve fans better than anyone in the 21st century," said George Bodenheimer, ESPN President.

Bob Eaton, ESPN's senior vice president and managing editor said: "After extensive research, viewing other television news services and feedback from viewers, we've positioned ESPNEWS to present televised sport's most comprehensive and interactive news outlet without creating information overload on screen.

"Sports fans have the ability to multi-task when they search for up-to-the-minute scores and stats," continued Eaton. "This service will resonate with fans who have the insatiable appetite for instantaneous sports data. We'll continue to test and add new innovations as the technology becomes available."

Now seen in more than 25 million television homes as of September 1 according to Nielsen Media Research, ESPNEWS will unveil:

  • A continuous bottom-line ticker displayed on-screen during national commercial breaks with multiple layered lines and information grids
  • An indexing graphic on the bottom-line scroll depicting what series of news and updates will be coming up next on the ticker
