The lowdown: Roy is still considered the best big-game goalie in the game. But he hasn't had great postseasons the past few years. From the way he's played the latter third of the season, there's reason to believe he's got one more magical run in him.
And having Ray Bourque doesn't hurt either.
That's the key for Roy. Don't try to do too much. Don't try to act like a legend. With the talent on the Avs, he should be able to focus on one thing: Stopping the puck. Joe Sakic and Bourque can help with leadership. Like Ed Belfour, Roy hasn't had to start too many games, and because coach Bob Hartley gave him some rest down the stretch, Roy should be fired up and ready.

| If they can, teams have to outwait Roy and, with the puck, have more patience than he does. If they can do that, shooters may be able to get him to go down early and exploit the high part of the net. The next way is not being tricked into just shooting between his legs. That's where he wants you to shoot. He gives away that shot, but he's the best at taking it away. Teams have to beat him with pressure right in his face and crashing the net. |
Roy beats everybody with his presence, with his mystique and with the aura that he has. Take away the mental part of it, and he's an excellent percentage goaltender. Odds are against anyone beating him on the angles. |
