SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Right wing Owen Nolan, the San Jose
Sharks' captain and leading scorer last season, signed a new
contract with the team and is expected to rejoin the Sharks soon.

Nolan, a restricted free agent, was signed to a five-year deal
with a club option for a sixth season. Financial terms of the deal
were not available.
"I'm happy about it. It's a big headache that's gone away," he
said in a conference call late Wednesday night. "It's frustrating
to watch your teammates play without you."
Nolan set franchise records last season with 44 goals and 84
points. He was the only NHL player to score more than 40 goals,
record more than 100 penalty minutes and have more than 200 hits.
He was second in the league last season in goals, tied for sixth
in points, and led the NHL with 18 power-play goals. He also led
the Sharks with 10 points during the playoffs.
The Sharks, who lost their season opener last Friday, will not
have the burly forward in the lineup for a few more games. Nolan is
recovering from a mid-August hernia operation.
"I have no pain and the strength is good," Nolan said. "I
haven't skated as hard so the endurance isn't there, but I have
been lifting weights and mountain biking."
