BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Bruins, in a desperate search for team
chemistry under new coach Mike Keenan, may have found some with the
help of Jason Allison and Sergei Samsonov.
Mikko Eloranta scored with 1:29 left, while Allison moved into a
tie for the NHL scoring lead with 21 points, as the Boston Bruins
ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory Thursday night
over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Allison had two goals and two assists and Samsonov had three
assists in a game that saw the Blackhawks erase three deficits.
"You always have to have go-to guys," Bruins defenseman Paul
Coffey said. "Mike coming in and putting Sergei and Jason on the
same line is key. Sometimes great players have to play with great
players."
The goal came 36 seconds after Chicago's Tony Amonte tied it
4-4.
Eloranta scored a fluke goal when he shot the puck at the net
from along the boards and it squirted between the pads of
Blackhawks goalie Rob Tallas.
"For sure we were thinking overtime," Blackhawks coach Alpo
Suhonen said. "That goal was unbelievable and discouraging. There
was no excuse for it."
Allison is only one goal from equaling his last season's output
and leads the NHL in power-play points with 15.
"I'm scoring and creating goals, but at times I still think
there is room for improvement," Allison said. "The two games in
New York I didn't play well so I was frustrated."
The Blackhawks' three victories this season have come against
the two expansion teams, Columbus and Minnesota. Chicago is 0-8-0-1
against the rest of the NHL.
Darren Van Impe scored his first goal of the season on the power
play and added an assist.
Allison gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead 32 seconds in, when his wrist
shot went over the shoulder of Tallas, who played five years for
the Bruins before signing with Chicago this summer.
"The Bruins are playing a much more wide open style," Tallas
said. "They were a lot more conservative under Pat Burns."
Michael Nylander got the Blackhawks on the board at 6:38 of the
second during a two-man advantage when he converted a Steve
Sullivan pass and scored through the legs of Bruins goalie Kay
Whitmore.
Boston snapped an 0-6-2 winless streak at home against Chicago
with the Bruins' last victory coming on Feb. 9, 1991. It was the
Bruins' longest home winless streak against any opponent.
Reto Von Arx and Jean Yves Leroux had goals for the Blackhawks.
Eric Daze, who has requested a trade, was a healthy scratch for
Chicago. The Blackhawks selected Daze in the fifth round of the
1993 NHL draft after receiving the pick as compensation from the
Buffalo Sabres for goalie Dominik Hasek.
The Blackhawks have been outscored 18-5 in the first period this
season and have scored nine goals in the last six games.
