Senators avoid back-to-back losses

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

KANATA, Ontario (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators are trying to prove that they are not the same team the Toronto Maple Leafs knocked out of last season's playoffs.

Radek Bonk
Ottawa's Radek Bonk knocked over Curtis Joseph in the first period Tuesday. CuJo made 20 saves but the Senators prevailed.

The Senators rode newcomers Jani Hurme and Martin Havlat to a 4-3 victory Tuesday night over the Leafs -- Ottawa's second win over Toronto this season -- in front of a sellout crowd of 18,500.

Havlat had a goal and an assist and Hurme, starting in place of injured goalie Patrick Lalime, finished with 20 saves for the Senators.

"It took a period to get our legs tonight," said Ottawa coach Jacques Martin, whose team recorded a 4-0 win over the Leafs on Oct. 14 in Toronto. "With Patrick out, it's a good opportunity for (Hurme). He made the key saves at the right times. I think he's ready to play at this level."

Rob Zamuner's short-handed goal in the third period was the game-winner. Alexei Yashin and Magnus Arvedson also scored for Ottawa.

The Senators held off a late Toronto charge to win its first game after Florida stopped their Senators' nine-game unbeaten streak last Saturday.

Gary Roberts, Dimitry Yushkevich and Sergei Berezin scored for Toronto, which lost for just the second time in its last six (4-2-0-0). Curtis Joseph had 20 saves.

Ottawa's power play went 2-for-4; Toronto 1-for-7.

The Leafs trail the Senators by five points for the Northeast Division lead.

"We took a couple of stupid, non-contact penalties and they scored on them," Toronto coach Pat Quinn said of second-period power-play goals by Havlat and Yashin that overcame a 1-0 Toronto lead.

"We had two or three (guys) who had bad nights but, for the most part, it was a pretty good effort."

Roberts gave Toronto a 1-0 lead 12:29 in on a power play, but Hurme followed with several good stops, including a toe save off Darcy Tucker's wraparound.

Joseph only faced four shots in the first and looked unbeatable until Yashin fired a shot from the left faceoff dot between his pads at 9:29 of the second.

Havlat converted a pass from Radek Bonk at 13:07 to give Ottawa the lead and Arvedson made it 3-1 just 40 seconds into the third period.

Zamuner appeared to put the game out of reach with his short-handed goal at 6:14.

But Yushkevich beat a screened Hurme at 10:31 and Berezin cut the lead to 4-3 at 11:52.

"After the first half of the second period, Ottawa took over," Leafs captain Mats Sundin said. "Four to one is tough to come back from, but we were almost able to get a tie."

In its previous two home games, Ottawa blew third-period leads of 3-0 and 5-1 to Pittsburgh and Atlanta, respectively, before settling for ties.

"It was pretty scary, but we were used to that the last couple of home games," Hurme said. "It was a great Halloween party for the fans."

The Senators survived a Toronto power play with Senators defenseman Karel Rachunek serving an interference penalty with less than two minutes left and Joseph pulled for the extra attacker.

Game notes
Left-wing Steve Thomas returned to the Toronto lineup after missing three games with a hand infection. ... D Jason York played for Ottawa after missing one game with a strained right shoulder. Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson missed his sixth straight game with an injured right hip flexor.
