BOX SCORE
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators will eventually lose their
first game of the season. Jani Hurme made sure that the Pittsburgh
Penguins would not be the first team to beat them.
Hurme made 31 saves and Radek Bonk scored one goal and set up
another in the second period as the Senators remained undefeated by
holding on to beat the Penguins 3-2 Wednesday night.

The Senators (5-0-3) are the last team without a loss in the
Eastern Conference. After losing leads in their last two games, the
Senators withstood Pittsburgh's 16-shot, two-goal attack in the
third period.
Hurme keyed that as he continued to substitute for the injured
Patrick Lalime. Lalime, who leads the NHL in save percentage, is
out with a knee injury.
"That might have been one of (Hurme's) better performances
since he was thrown in," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said. "I
thought he was strong."
Said Bonk, "We didn't give up many scoring chances in the first
two periods and when we did, he made some big saves."
Jaromir Jagr scored his eighth goal of the season for Pittsburgh
but failed to score on two breakaways.
On the first, Hurme stuck out his left leg and blocked Jagr's
shot. That happened midway through the first period with the game
still scoreless. Hurme said the key was holding his position for as
long as possible.
"I knew if I started moving, he'd be able to do something
because he has so much skill," he said.
"He was too quick," Jagr said. "He had the pad there. I tried
to lift it and I couldn't."
The second breakaway came with Pittsburgh shorthanded and
trailing 2-0 in the second. Jagr's shot grazed the crossbar and
sailed over the glass.
"If he gets either one of those it's probably a different
game," Bonk said.
The Senators were leading 1-0 at 9:31 of the second period when
Magnus Arvedson bumped Martin Straka off the puck, then centered to
Bonk, who beat Garth Snow for his fourth goal.
Penguins defenseman Jiri Slegr fell down at the blue line at
15:30 of the second and Bonk was able to easily skate past
defenseman Michal Rozsival to set up Arvedson's fifth goal.
Alexei Kovalev was credited with his third goal at 16:43 of the
third. It appeared that Jagr deflected the shot with a high stick
but the goal was allowed after a replay review.
Mike Fisher scored in the first period for Ottawa. Defenseman
Janne Laukkanen lost the puck along the boards and Fisher skated
out and surprised Snow with a shot from the high slot.
Kovalev's pass set up Jagr's power-play goal at 7:00 of the
third.
