PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Anaheim's Paul Kariya had a simple
explanation for the Mighty Ducks' third-period rally that stretched
the Philadelphia Flyers' winless streak to seven games on Saturday.
| | The Flyers' Peter White crashes into Jason Marshall in front of goalie Guy Hebet and Ruslan Salei. | "Philadelphia stopped checking and we took advantage," Kariya
said after Teemu Selanne's power-play goal with 2:38 left gave the
Mighty Ducks a 4-3 victory over the slumping Flyers.
Philadelphia is 0-5-2 since beating Vancouver on opening night.
Selanne picked up a rebound of a shot by Kariya and flipped it
high over rookie goaltender Roman Cechmanek.
"If you give Teemu any chances like that he's going to bury
them," Kariya said.
Teammate Tony Hrkac had tied the game 3-3 at 8:31 of the period
when he slid across the slot to punch in another rebound.
"We started to get better and better as the game went on,"
said Kariya, who also assisted on Steve Rucchin's second-period
goal that started the Mighty Ducks back from an early 2-0 deficit.
Mike Leclerc also scored for the Mighty Ducks, who are unbeaten
(2-0-2) in their last four games.
"We didn't have a great start, but we slowly got ourselves back
into it," said Anaheim coach Craig Hartsburg. "In the physical
play we started winning some battles. We started to get in front of
people."
Philadelphia coach Craig Ramsay agreed with Hartsburg's
assessment, saying the Flyers didn't play well enough after the
first period.
"We lost some one-on-one battles on the boards and allowed
their point man open shots," Ramsay explained. "After the first
period, we weren't as intense at getting pucks outside the blue
line. We allowed their defense to join rushes.
"They kind of beat us back up ice. That's unacceptable."
Justin Williams, Paul Ranheim and Daniel McGillis scored for
the Flyers.
Williams put the Flyers ahead 1-0 when he jumped out of the
penalty box and raced in on a breakaway to beat Anaheim goaltender
Guy Hebert wide to the glove side at 10:16 of the first period.
Ranheim, acquired in the offseason from Carolina, made it 2-0
about four minutes later when Hebert got his stick on his shot
during a scramble in front of he net but kicked it in with his
skate.
Rucchin brought Anaheim within 2-1 at 6:06 of the second period
by lifting a shot from the crease high over Cechmanek.
McGillis responded 46 seconds later with a slapshot from the
slot before Leclerc made it 3-2 by punching in a rebound at 9:11 of
the second.
"We stopped doing what gave us success in the first period,"
said Kent Manderville, who assisted on Ranheim's goal. "It's not
rocket science. We didn't stick to that style of play and it cost
us."
Hebert had 29 saves for Anaheim.
Game notes Flyers' left wing John LeClair underwent successful disk surgery
on Saturday at USC University Hospital in Los Angeles and is
expected to be out six to eight weeks. ... With the
victory, Anaheim set a franchise record for most wins (four) and
points (10) after eight games. ... Rucchin played in his 400th NHL
game. ... The Mighty Ducks concluded a rugged five-game road trip
in eight days with a 3-1-1 record. ... Selanne extended his scoring
streak to six games (4-4-8) with his game-winner and an assist on
Rucchin's goal.
