SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- With Pavel Bure sidelined, the Florida
Panthers were willing to settle for a tie.
| | Panthers goalie Trevor Kidd gets bombarded, but comes up with the save in the first period vs. Carolina. |
Bure scored the game's final goal midway through the second
period, then sat out the third period and overtime with a slight
groin injury as Florida and the Carolina Hurricanes played to a 2-2
tie Friday night.
Josef Vasicek had a goal and an assist for Carolina. Florida
came from behind twice, then turned conservative.
"The whole third period, both teams seemed real tentative,"
said Florida forward Mike Sillinger, who scored his 100th goal in
nine NHL seasons. "No one wanted to lose the game because it was a
divisional game, and no one wanted to lose the point. Both teams
were scared to lose."
Bure said he didn't think his groin injury was serious, and he
hopes to play in the Panthers' next game Wednesday at Phoenix.
"I didn't feel too much pain, but the doctors told me to stay
off it," he said. "Maybe I could have played in the third period,
but they didn't want me to take a chance."
Bure, who led the NHL with 58 goals last season, scored his
second of the season to tie it 2-2. He knocked the puck out of the
air on a rebound of his own miss.
It was Florida's only goal in five power-play chances.
The Panthers (0-1-1-1) remained winless and have yet to hold to
a lead, while Carolina (1-0-2) remained unbeaten. The teams have
gone into overtime seven times in their past 11 meetings.
"It's typical," Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. "It's
what you would expect from a division rival. Most of these games
are tough, and they always seem to be close. It seems that whenever
one team scores, the other answers with a goal."
The Hurricanes are unbeaten in their past 20 overtime games
(4-0-16). They preserved the tie when Arturs Irbe stopped Ray
Whitney on a breakaway with a minute left.
"When I saw him coming right at me, I thought he would try to
pull something sneaky," Irbe said. "He's very creative, but I
think maybe he got a little too cute."
Irbe also stopped a breakaway by Sillinger and finished with 26
saves. Florida's Trevor Kidd made 22 saves against his former team.
Rob DiMaio's first goal of the season, on a feed from Martin
Gelinas, gave Carolina a 1-0 lead 1:53 in. Sillinger tied it at
3:07 with his first goal.
Sami Kapanen stole the puck from Dan Boyle and fed Vasicek, who
scored his first goal to put Carolina ahead 2-1 at 5:39 of second
period.
There were no penalties in the third period, when both teams
played dump-and-chase hockey.
"We were trying to protect the point, but we were going for the
win," Vasicek said. "We're a little disappointed it didn't come
out better for us."
Game notes

road trip with the game at Phoenix. ... Panthers defenseman Todd
Simpson, who broke his toe during the preseason, didn't play but
