RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina's new style got some major
reinforcement Tuesday night.
| | Shane Willis missed this shot, but the Hurricanes put five pucks past Stars goaltender Marty Turco, who started for resting Ed Belfour. |
Rod Brind'Amour and Bates Battaglia scored four minutes apart
early in a three-goal second period as the Hurricanes beat the
Dallas Stars 5-2.
"This proves to everybody in this room that we can play our
open style, but still not be ridiculous about it and be smart in
our own end," said Jeff O'Neill, who scored Carolina's first goal.
Sandis Ozolinsh added a short-handed goal late in the second as
Carolina defeated goalie Marty Turco, who was making his NHL debut,
as the Stars rested Ed Belfour.
The defending Western Conference champions were sluggish
after Monday night's victory at Toronto and are off to a 1-2-1
start, scoring only eight goals.
"I think they are a little bit tired. Those guys are champions
over there, but we kind of jumped on them," O'Neill said. "The
kid in net got hung out to dry a little bit. But they've won enough
times -- so tough for them."
Brett Hull's 612th career goal late in the second was one of the
few bright spots for Dallas, which went 0-for-7 on the power play.
"There is none," Hull said when asked about his team's
offense. "We'd better pick it up. It's not good enough. We've
changed a few things, but it doesn't matter. There's no excuse. You
have to score."
Carolina led 1-0 before Brind'Amour scored his first of the
season off a pass from Sami Kapanen, who took a shot on Turco, got
the rebound and slipped it to a wide open Brind'Amour.
Battaglia, promoted to the top line after a season-opening
3-3 tie against Washington on Saturday night, then scored off a
well-placed pass from Ron Francis on a 2-on-1 to make it 3-0.
Francis also assisted on Carolina's first goal, giving him 1,089
career assists.
"You can't give up four 2-on-1 goals, especially with a kid
who's playing in his first NHL game," Hull said.
A minute and a half after Hull closed the score to 3-1,
Ozolinsh, who came over in a draft day trade with Colorado, drilled
his short-handed goal high past Turco for his first score with
Carolina.
The Hurricanes pelted Turco, the former University of Michigan
star who holds the NCAA record for wins at 127, with 13
first-period shots. But most came because of Turco's poor decision
making.
Twice he gave the Hurricanes a two-man advantage when he flipped
pucks into the crowd without it touching the glass, which resulted
in a pair of delay-of-game minors.
However, Carolina's power play was 0-for-3 before O'Neill got
his first of the season into a wide open net as Turco lunged to tip
a puck away and was out of position.
"All the guys need to jump on the same page," Turco said. "We
need to realize that the grind starts now and it's a marathon."
Late in the period, Carolina was forced to kill a two-man
disadvantage for 1:20. Arturs Irbe came up with six saves during
the onslaught despite being inactive most of the period and Sergei
Zubov hit the post as Dallas' early-season offensive woes
continued.
Mike Keane of Dallas and Tommy Westlund of Carolina added
third-period goals.
Game notes Carolina rookie defenseman Niclas Wallin will miss 3-4
weeks with a broken wrist. ... It took Carolina 36 games to score a
short-handed goal last season. ... Hull's 612th goal moved him one
behind Mario Lemieux for eighth on the NHL's career list. ... The
Hurricanes didn't score as many as five goals until their 24th game
last season. ... There were 20 minor penalties called in the game.
