BOX SCORE
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- The Vancouver Canucks pulled out a stunning
victory.
Denis Pederson scored a shorthanded goal with 24.9 seconds left
as the Canucks scored three late goals to beat the Tampa Bay
Lightning 5-4 Sunday night.
| | Canucks left wing Steve Kariya shields Lightning center Steve Martins from the puck in the first period Sunday. | "It's a huge builder for our team," Pederson said. "Winning
teams, when they get down late in the game, they don't quit. We
never did."
Daniel Sedin scored his first NHL goal with 1:13 left in the
third period to tie the game for Vancouver. His brother, Henrik,
set up the goal from the low slot with a pass from the corner.
"Henrik worked real hard behind the net," Daniel Sedin said.
"When Henrik got up there, I knew that pass was coming."
Mattias Ohlund had gotten the Canucks within 4-3 with 2:55
remaining.
"I'm very proud of the way the guys persevered tonight, and we
did right to the end," Vancouver coach Marc Crawford said.
Paul Mara had given the Lightning a 3-2 lead at 6:06 of the
second period. Rookie Brad Richards, the Memorial Cup MVP last
season, scored his first NHL goal on a wrist shot that made it 4-2
at 14:27 of the second period.
Crawford pulled goaltender Felix Potvin, who allowed four goals
on 12 shots, after Richards' goal and replaced him with Bob
Essensa.
"He wasn't terrific, but he didn't have much of a chance on
three of the four goals," Crawford said. "He's been better -- we
all know that -- and he will be better."
Potvin has allowed nine goals in just under five periods.
Tampa Bay, which finished with 16 shots, had just one shot in
the 22 minutes following Potvin's departure. Vancouver had 41
shots on Lightning goaltender Dan Cloutier.
"If we would have won tonight, we would have stole it," Tampa
Bay coach Steve Ludzik said. "Sometimes it's good the guys realize
that you can't steal games like that and just rely on Cloutier to
be diving all over making great saves. Obviously, it hurts, but
it's a good lesson."
The Canucks took a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Peter Schaefer scored at 31 seconds and Donald Brashear added his
second goal in as many games at 1:38.
The Lightning tied it before the first period ended on goals by
Steve Martins at 14:19 and Fredrik Modin during a power-play at
19:55.
Tampa Bay's Wayne Primeau had three assists.
