BOX SCORE
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Turner Stevenson and Alexander Mogilny scored as the New Jersey Devils closed out the preseason with a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Monday night. The Stanley Cup champions finished the preseason with a record of 4-2-2-1. The Islanders were winless in the preseason, finishing 0-5-1. The Islanders' most obvious problem remains a lack of offense. They scored only seven goals in six preseason games. Stevenson put the Devils on the board at 8:26 of the first period. Bobby Holik set up the goal as he wheeled around the Islanders net before hitting Stevenson, who was cutting to the net and beat John Vanbiesbrouck. Mogilny added a power-play goal at 9:30 of the second to put New Jersey ahead 2-0. Martin Brodeur lost his shutout bid when Taylor Pyatt scored a power-play goal with 2:38 remaining in the third.
