DENVER (AP) -- Brian Rolston is making himself right at home with the Colorado Avalanche.

After being acquired for the popular Claude Lemieux, Rolston received a lukewarm reception from Avalanche fans. Wednesday night, Rolston scored and played a strong defensive game to lead Colorado to a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles, sending the Kings to their sixth-consecutive loss.

"Brian knows his responsibilities defensively and also is generating some nice scoring chances," Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. "Rolston is clicking well with Stephane Yelle and Shjon Podein on our checking line."

Alexei Gusarov, Sandis Ozolinsh and Adam Deadmarsh added goals and Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg had two assists each as the Avalanche beat the Kings for the first time in three games this season.

"I'm feeling real comfortable with Shjon and Stephane," said Rolston, who got his fifth goal since being acquired on Nov. 3 from New Jersey. "Bob (Hartley) has also been using me more on the penalty kill and when you get more responsibility as a person, it makes you want to play better."

Patrick Roy stopped 28 shots to end a personal three-game losing streak.

Gusarov scored only his 37th career goal in 538 games and his first since Apr. 11.

Luc Robitaille scored twice for Los Angeles, which last won on Dec. 11. Jere Karalahti and Zigmund Palffy had two assists as the Kings lost again while trying to gain the franchise's 1,000th victory.

"We played hard," Los Angeles coach Andy Murray said. "We just didn't deliver in key situations."

Colorado led 2-1 after one period on goals by Rolston and Gusarov, both deflections off Kings defenseman Rob Blake. Rolston's wrist shot from the right circle popped off Blake's leg and under the stick of Fiset at 4:54.

"The puck came out to me off a draw," Rolston said. "I just snapped it at the net and it barely got in."

Eric Messier fed Gusarov at the right point, and the defenseman bounced a slap shot off Blake's skate and past Fiset at 12:29.

"On the first goal, the rebound hit me in the back of the leg and went in," Blake said. "When you are struggling, you get bad bounces."

Los Angeles missed on two scoring chances before Robitaille sent a back-hander over Roy's right shoulder at 13:52 with the Kings on the power play.

With Colorado on the power play, Ozolinsh extended the Avalanche lead to 3-1 at 2:20 of the second with his 10th goal. Ozolinsh fired a one-timer past Fiset from the left circle.

The Kings were 0-for-4 on the power play in the period, and managed only two shots during a four-minute advantage.

Robitaille scored his second goal at 15:31 of the third when he tipped in a shot from the right point by Karalahti. Deadmarsh sealed the game for Colorado, converting a pass from Sakic with 1:01 left.
