RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Brendan Shanahan is scoring points in bunches.

Shanahan had a goal and an assist Wednesday night to help the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. The left wing also scored two goals and had an assist against San Jose on Monday.

	Brendan Shanahan had an assist and his 20th goal of the season.

"Shanahan is playing as good as he's ever played," said Detroit's Steve Yzerman, who added a goal assisted by Shanahan. "Once he gets on a roll, it just multiplies."

This season, Shanahan had a point in five straight games and then posted a six-game point streak, a stretch that ended earlier this month.

"One thing I've really strived for in my career is consistency," said Shanahan, who already has 34 points this season after last year's total of 58.

Martin Lapointe also had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which has won nine of 11 this month.

Shanahan scored his 20th goal at 6:20 of the first to put Detroit ahead 1-0. Shanahan, just out of the penalty box, took a pass from Lapointe behind the goal and shoveled it around the net. His first shot missed, but he redirected the rebound past Arturs Irbe.

Detroit's second goal came with 20 seconds left in the period. Detroit kept firing at Irbe on a power play until Shanahan got a clear shot from just inside the blue line that Yzerman deflected into the net.

Lapointe's short-handed goal at 13:45 of the final period put Detroit up 4-1. He broke away at the Carolina blue line and fired in a shot for his eighth goal. It was the second short-handed goal allowed this season by the Hurricanes.

Carolina's Ron Francis and Yzerman rank sixth and seventh on the NHL career points list. Yzerman's assist put him one below Francis at 1,514.

Paul Coffey of Carolina, No. 8 on the list, is one point away from being the first defenseman to ever reach 1,500 points.

The Hurricanes dropped below .500 at 13-14-7 for a second time this season after losing three times in a four-game homestand.

"They're a powerful offensive team and have at least the top three or four defensive players in the league based on their experience and skill," Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. "You're not going to get a lot of chances."

Carolina cut the lead to 2-1 when Marek Malik scored his first goal of the season at 14:39 of the second period on a pass from Paul Ranheim. Malik had only four points entering the game.

The Red Wings went back up by two goals 4:51 into the third period on Tomas Holmstrom's sixth of the season. Holmstrom took a pass from Sergei Fedorov in front of the net and slid the puck past Irbe.

Carolina's opponent has scored first in 12 of the last 13 games.
